SCPro Fundamentals Supply Chain Management Certification Program

The Deputy Sector Navigator for Global Trade & Logistics for San Diego & Imperial Counties (DSNGTL) and the San Diego CITD, in collaboration with the Center for Supply Chain Education at Broward College, is offering courses in Supply Chain Management that will prepare participants for industry-recognized certifications through the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP). The Center for Supply Chain Education at Broward College is a national supply chain management education and certification program established by a $24.5 million U.S. Department of Labor TAACCCT grant to the LINCS Consortium.

The Center offers eight different certification tracks, including: (click on titles for descriptions)

Supply Chain Management Principles
The Supply Chain Management Principles certification track is intended to provide a high-level overview of all functions in a supply chain. Each function has a corresponding certification track and each of the remaining seven tracks are outlined below, beginning with Demand Planning and ending with Customer Service. The principles acquired in this track provide the necessary foundation to fully comprehend the remaining individual certification tracks. Supply Chain Management Principles can be considered as a launch pad to begin your learning experience to facilitate success in the remaining certification tracks and is recommended as a prerequisite to begin your learning and certification in supply chain management.

Warehousing Operations

The Warehousing Operations certification track is intended to provide the basics of warehousing operations, including distribution centers and fulfillment centers. Key elements of the track include the role of warehousing and distribution centers in the supply chain, and the other key functions of goods receiving, movement, storage, picking, packing, and packaging.  Other value-added techniques, like cross-docking and kitting, are also defined.  Additionally, the Warehouse Management System (WMS) is presented as the back-bone, or operating system, that enables the warehouse to function effectively and efficiently.

Transportation Operations

The Transportation Operations certification Track presents the details for transporting goods. Transportation of goods often requires multiple modes of transportation, and the combination of modes can vary depending on cost, values, dimensions, weights, frequencies, time-definite delivery requirements, and other special requirements (e.g., hazardous or refrigerated cargoes). This certification track is intended to provide the basics of transportation operations and transportation-related positions within supply chain management.Key elements of this certification track include the modes of transportation, transportation technology, company roles and operations within the transportation field, the impact of transportation on the overall economy, sustainability in transportation, and how the field is evolving to meet the projected needs of the future.

Customer Service Operations

The customer service operation certification track is woven into every aspect of the supply chain; therefore, customer satisfaction and customer retention are of paramount importance for every company.  Companies use products and services to attract customers, so the need for customer service operations is unavoidable.  Customer service, when property implemented, can be an enabling process and strategy to create customer satisfaction.  Customer satisfaction, in turn, creates satisfied and loyal customers and maintaining these relationships are key for continued sales and repeat business.  In order to provide customer satisfaction at every level, customer service should be defined by the culture of the organization and it needs to be the responsibility of every employee during all customer interactions.This certification track is intended to provide a discussion of the basics of customer service, sound communications processes, advice for dealing with challenging customers, the customer order and return (reverse logistics) processes, jobs in customer service, and legal concerns.

Demand Planning
The demand planning certification track presents the details that are necessary to create and utilize a forecast to build an actual demand plan. Forecasting is a process that predicts customer demands. The demand planning process uses the forecast as a basis to more accurately develop a plan that ensures inventory levels are appropriate to meet the predicted demands. The demand plan is used to create purchase requisitions for the purchasing department to purchase the needed goods and services.  It’s also used to plan manufacturing work orders to turn raw materials and components into finished goods.  Demand Planning is often considered the “engine” that drives a business and the creation of the plan requires collaboration from all departments to be successful.

Manufacturing and Service Operations

The manufacturing and services operations certification track is a key element of the operations organization in a company and it’s chartered to provide and manage resources and for converting raw materials into finished products. This certification track is intended to provide the basics of manufacturing and service operations for effective interface with other elements across a supply chain.Key elements of this certification track include the role of manufacturing and service operations, linking market requirements and the selection of manufacturing processes, facility location strategies, facility layouts, the importance of production planning and control in synchronizing operations, the importance of quality management and performance measurement, and the impact of emerging technologies in operations.

Inventory Management
The Inventory management certification tracks provides the details necessary to effectively plan for and manage inventory levels to satisfy customer demands and maximize profitability. Inventory management controls how efficiently resources are consumed in producing products and services for customers. Inventory management interacts with all elements of the supply chain and the focus is to achieve a balance of having sufficient supply to meet customer demand.  Ineffective planning can result in insufficient inventory levels resulting in lost sales or excessive inventory resulting in financial write-offs of obsolete stock.  This track also covers the importance and use of inventory in the supply chain, exposure to the different types of inventory, techniques for effectively managing and controlling inventory levels, the relationship between forecasting and inventory management, and the financial impacts of inventory investments.

Supply Management and Procurement

The supply management and procurement certification track presents the details of how goods and services are ordered by purchasing by converting purchase requisitions, created by demand planning, to purchase orders issued to suppliers.  In this track, specific emphasis is placed on supplier selection and approval, sourcing activities, negotiations with suppliers and the overall systematic selection of goods and services. Innovations with the internet along with endless options for transportation modes enable procurement organizations to source items globally to achieve the best value solutions for their requirements.

Participants can complete one track, or all eight, depending on their individual educational and career goals. All courses are available through a self-paced online learning system.

After completing a course, participants may sit for a SCPro Fundamentals certification offered and certified by CSCMP. Upon passing the exam, the participant receives a certification in the particular skill sets tested by that certification exam, making them more competitive in obtaining and sustaining employment.
